Larry Sultan (1946-2009)

GREENBRAE, CALIFORNIA - Lascia questa valle di lacrime il fotografo americano Larry Sultan e, manco a farlo apposta, proprio The Valley si chiamava uno dei suoi ultimi libri, che ritraeva scene d'interni in case utilizzate come set per film porno. Un'altro suo lavoro, questo degli anni '70, fatto a quattro mani con Mike Mandel, Evidence, raggruppava immagini a capocchia, senza alcuna didascalia esplicativa. Un critico ne scrisse: The project demonstrated brilliantly the degree to which we have no calculus to unravel relations between what a picture shows and what it explains. Ma la raccolta fotografica più significativa fra quelle che ci ha lasciato è senza ombra di dubbio Pictures from Home, che ritraeva i suoi genitori nelle più svariate attività casalinghe. A proposito di questa foto, in cui appare depresso e sconsolato, il padre dichiarò: I'd get set, I'd get comfortable and he says to me "Don't smile", which would absolutely irritate me because when he says "Don't smile" in my own mind I have no idea what he is projecting. What is he trying to tell me to do? I remember that picture so distinctly sitting on the bed, shirt and tie dressed up and I looked like a full on lost soul and I look at the picture and I say "That's not me sitting on the bed, that's you sitting on the bed. That's a self portrait! Any time you show that picture you tell people that that's not me sitting on the bed looking all dressed up and nowhere to go, depressed. That's you sitting on the bed and I am happy to help you with the project but let's get things straight here!" Finalmente uno che dice le cose come stanno a sti fighetti di fotografi. link
